Hiking with the Boys
Spring Break and my new freedom - what should we do? Well, at a recent DAR meeting we had a guest speaker talk to us about her childhood in North Bend, Ohio and it was so interesting to me that I decided to take the boys to check out the area. We first did some hiking at Shawnee Lookout State Park. We walked along some of the Miami Fort trail.
This historic log cabin, built around 1795, was relocated to the park in 1971.
The 18th century stone springhouse is where the 1786 Treaty of Fort Finney was signed. There's apparently a replica of the treaty inside but basically there was no one around the park and everything was closed up.
This cool Indian burial mound...
but the boys decided the playground was even cooler!
The Little Turtle Trail with signs of spring!
Seeing this little guy made me so sad! He still looked so perfect so his demise had to have been very recent.
Definitely wouldn't want to fall into these thorny branches!
A beautiful view of the Ohio River.
And a little more time on the playground before heading to our next stop.
After seeing this bend in the river, it's easy to see where North Bend, Ohio got its name!
Our final stop of the day was the tomb of our 9th president, William Henry Harrison. As an adult he had settled in North Bend and his grandson, Benjamin, the 23rd president of the United States, was born here.
The speaker at our DAR meeting had grown up in the house across the street from the tomb. At that time, apparently, it was not being taken care of so her father took it upon himself to make sure it was always cleaned and the landscaping looked nice. Her father felt that the tomb of a president of the United States deserved better. What a good man! Thank goodness things have changed and it's well maintained now.
Although there was a little grumbling involved, what a treat it was to spend the day with my boys!
